Embattled MP Kildišienė asks election body to revoke mandate

“All we can say now is that Greta Kildišienė submitted her resignation, with more detailed comments to be made after the Central Electoral Committee’s decision,” her lawyer Evaldas Valčiukas told journalists, while Kildišienė made no comments whatsoever.

Zenonas Vaigauskas, chairman of the election watchdog, told journalists the commission would address Kildišienė’s plea on Tuesday, consequently, her powers will probably be suspended as of Thursday.

Kildišienė announced her intentions to give up her mandate on Friday evening after it turned out she had concealed from her party fellows the investigation opened a decade ago about theft suspicions. The probe was then discontinued after compensation of damages.

“I failed to take account of my young mistakes upon the situation where I would become an MP and the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union would become the ruling party. I have not been charged but I realized that the facts that have been published have a negative effect on the reputation of the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union, which seeks implementation of principles of honesty, transparency and openness in Lithuania,” she then said in a statement.

Kildišienė came under public scrutiny last week over to a car leasing agreement between her mother and Agrokoncernas, a company owned by Karbauskis. The public unease was later fueled by questions regarding her education and the decade-old investigation of stealing suspicions.

Kildišienė was elected to the parliament in the Anykščiai-Panevežys single-member constituency, therefore, the constituency will have to hold repeated elections to fill her vacant slot.
