According to the press release, the groundwater level started to drop back in April-May and may remain at the low level until September or October.
In July, the groundwater level was below the earlier average in major parts of Lithuania.
As compared to last summer, the groundwater levels are lower, with the exception of western Lithuania that was in a worse situation in 2014.
The groundwater supplies water to surface water bodies and determines the condition of surface ecosystems. Natural flora is adapted to the prevailing groundwater level and its fluctuations, however, extreme changes may be disastrous.
Weather services said that many water bodies are blow the lowest average water level due to the continuing hot spell.
Warm and dry weather is expected to continue for the next ten days, causing decrease in the amount of water in all rivers.
