Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union (LPGU) representative Stasys Jakeliūnas is no longer being proposed to become Minister of Finance, he will be offered the chairman seat in the Seimas Budget and Finance Committee. This was confirmed to Delfi by the politician himself.
“My goal always was to work in a financial oversight institution rather than executive government,” said S. Jakeliūnas. The politician states that he would have considered working in the executive government, if he was offered the opportunity, but in this case a different decision was made.
Earlier it was announced that the post of Budget and Finance Committee chairman would go to Viktoras Rinkevičius.
The LPGU Chairman Ramūnas Karbauskis told journalists that he cannot answer why S. Jakeliūnas was found to not be suitable to become Minister of Finance. According to the politician this question should be directed to the future Prime Minister.
Meanwhile the candidate to the seat of PM Saulius Skvernelis stated that he will answer the question when he is appointed. “We will now have two very strong individuals – both the committee chairman and minister,” he responded laconically.
Seimas Deputy Speaker Rima Baškienė told Delfi that everyone is mindful of where their knowledge is more important, parliamentary work is also given much “weight”.
“V. Rinkevičius believes that it would be beneficial for S. Jakeliūnas to work here because S. Jakeliūnas, as you know was proposed as a minister candidate. However the decision was made that his knowledge is needed by the Seimas. Such a decision was made voluntarily in the fraction,” she explained the situation.
According to Delfi sources S. Jakeliūnas‘ candidacy was not approved by the President.
During a visit to the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrat fraction last week S. Skvernelis mentioned that S. Jakeliūnas is not the only candidate for the post and spoke that a minister could not be a member of a parliamentary committee that manages the same subject area.
