The local Evangelical Lutheran community, architects, historians, heritage specialists and representatives of public organizations and the municipality are unanimous on the plan to build the church in its original historic size in the city’s Market Square.
“St John’s Church was one of the most beautiful buildings in old Klaipėda, and its tower was the tallest structure in the city, serving as a lighthouse for many ships approaching the port. It was also one of the key sites of spiritual life in Klaipėda, similar to a cathedral in its significance,” Klaipėda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas said.
The building costs are estimated at around EUR 7.2 million.
The original St John’s Church in Klaipėda dated back to the 13th century and was completely demolished after the war.
