The criminal case was handed to a Vilnius court following a long intelligence operation by the State Security Department.
The defendant has been identified as R.L., with his exact identity withheld.
Further comment on the investigation will be provided by Deputy Prosecutor General Darius Raulušaitis, the State Security Department’s chief Gediminas Grina and Criminal Police Bureau chief Rolandas Kiškis on Monday afternoon.
In a brief press release, the State Security Department said “this is the first case of this type handed to court since the Intelligence Law was enforced on 1 January 2013.”
The department said in September it was observing intensified intelligence operations aggressively carried out by Russian intelligence and security services.
It then said 11 foreign intelligence officers were sent out of Lithuania for spying in the 2004-2014 period.
