“Russia is winning war against the United States,” he said on the LRT radio. “Direct confrontation via proxies between Russia and the US is intensifying, as the Americans rearm one groups and the Russians rearm others. The situation is completely hopeless.”
He notes that although both sides talk about cooperation in settling the conflict in Syria, this is little more than declarations. “Russia’s involvement [in Syria] only intensified tensions, because the need to fight not just the different forces operating in Syria, but also a new player, Russia, indicates that the situation is deteriorating, all actors in Syria are becoming more radicalised.
“It is possible that eventually Russians and Americans will be forced to do something, to talk, even if they’re reluctant. But so far cooperation has been little more than lip service, without any practical use,” Jonavičius comments.
