New LNG shipment to Lithuania on Independence Day marks new era

Up to now, only Lithuanian gas trading company Litgas had bought Norwegian gas, but this time the shipment is also destined for the state-owned Lithuanian gas import and supply company, Lietuvos Dujų Tiekimas (Lithuanian Gas Supply, LDT) and the Lithuanian fertiliser producer Achema.

Energy Minister Rokas Masiulis said that “this is the first gas under the new contract, according to which the gas price is lower than what Gazprom has offered”.

This week Litgas should sign a contract renewal and Achema is in the process of signing a supply contract with Statoil, LDT signed a contract with Statoil in early February.

LDT will acquire more than half of this year‘s demand – about 300 million cubic meters until October this year.

Achema spokeswoman Janina Sabaitė Melnikovienė told BNS that “the company will purchase up to 700 million cubic meters of gas from Statoil, which accounts for more than half of the company’s gas demand this year”.

Up to now Achema and LDT had only bought gas from Gazprom. Litgas has been supplied with gas from Statoil since last year, but this year the amount of gas being purchased was reduced from 540 million cubic metres to 350 million cubic metres per year. However, the Litgas contract was extended for five years until 2024.

By the end of September this year the terminal will have been supplied by 12 gas tankers bringing a total of 1.15 billion cubic metres of gas to Lithuania.
