Russia’s actions in Lithuania may be disguised as terrorism

“We can never be sure that a lone wolf or a person of vague mental ideas will not conduct a terrorist act. Let’s not forget a hybrid war, as well. (…) Certain goals and plans may be simply disguised as terrorism from the Eastern side,” the security chief said after meeting with the new Cabinet on Friday.

He confirmed he referred to Belarus and Russia as Eastern countries.

Tensions of terrorism were fueled by the recent attack in Germany when a truck killed 12 people when crashing into a Christmas fair in Berlin.

“We cannot be sure that these things will not happen in our country, and we have to be ready,” said Jauniskis who briefed the new ministers on intelligence operations and threats to national security.

“It is crucial for the new government and the new politicians who came to govern the state to know the work of the intelligence institution, to know what intelligence is needed for and know its work methods,” he added.

His words were seconded by Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.

“It is a very good example to help a new administration to work, the people who were not involved before should be able to understand the responsibility of a minister in all areas, when it comes to state security,” said the prime minister.

The State Security Department plans similar training for new MPs, as well.
