Uspaskich returning to Labor Party

The application from Uspaskich, the party’s former leader who had left the political arena, is yet to be considered by the council of the Kedainia branch of the Labor Party.

Uspaskich ceased membership in the Labor Party in December of 2015 but continues as its honorary chariman.

At a meeting with the party’s members in Kaunas in April, Uspaskich urged his party fellows to bring changes to the party and replace its leadership.

Uspaskich founded the Labor Party in October of 2003 and served as its leader until 2013, with a brief interruption. In 2013, a Vilnius court found him and a few other members of the party guilty on bookkeeping fraud charges. The politician was then sentenced to four years in prison.

During the hearings of the case in the Court of Appeals in December of 2015, Uspaskich announced plans to leave the Labor Party. The appellate imposed him a fine of 6,800 euros for bookkeeping fraud, a verdict upheld by the Supreme Court.

According to the latest poll conducted by RAIT survey company for BNS, the Labor Party is currently supported by about 3 percent of the electorate.
