75th anniversary of bloody 1941 June Uprising in Lithuania to be marked today

The morning after Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union, rebel leader Leonas Prapuolėnis announced the recreation of an independent Lithuania on Kaunas radio and the formation of a provisional Lithuanian government.

About 2,000 rebels died during the uprising.

Freedom fighters, Sąjūdis members and a number of non-governmental organisations in Lithuania commemorate the June Uprising of 1941 every year.

Commemorations will be held on Wednesday at noon in Kaunas in the garden of the Vytautas Magnus museum, and also at 16:00 in Vilnius at Independence Square.
