The Social Democrats on Wednesday registered 11 draft amendments to the Labour Code. The Seimas was to discuss them in the afternoon of the same day.
Some of the new amendments are similar to those proposed by President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who vetoed the code saying that it failed to provide sufficient safeguards to employees and reinforced “employers’ domination”.
Employers’ organizations and economists welcomed the adoption of the new Labour Code, but trade unions were opposed to the new regulation of labor relations, saying that it failed to protect employees’ interests.
Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has promised to improve the Labor Code.
Seimas Speaker Loreta Graužinienė said on Wednesday that the least contentious amendments should be adopted by October 9, when the first round of the elections are to be held, and those that are likely to cause a more heated debate should be passed by October 23, the date of the second round.
