“This is the figure we are now speaking about as an option. It’s not been taken out of nowhere but follows the evaluation of our capabilities of accepting them, the capabilities of refugee centres – all of that. We are trying to adequately assume a certain part of the burden. It’s our voluntary contribution,” the minister told the Žinių Radijas news radio on Thursday morning.
According to Linkevičius, the figure is not subject to negotiations, has been chosen following an analysis of Lithuania’s capabilities and is aimed at showing solidarity with southern EU countries.
Lithuania could take in up to 250 refugees, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said on Wednesday. In her words, the calculations were made by a formula based on the population and the gross domestic product (GDP). The president plans to propose to the Cabinet next week to accept such a number of refugees.
