Achema pays €31m in disputed gas taxes

Mindaugas Grinius, spokesman for the state-run gas transmission administrator Amber Grid, has confirmed to DELFI that one of Lithuania’s biggest industrial companies has transferred the sum it owed in the so-called LNG terminal tax that applies to all natural gas consumers.

“There are still late fees and interest, but the principle sum has been paid,” Grinius said.

Achema, by far the biggest natural gas consumer in the country, had refused to pay the surcharge which was levied on gas transmission in order to finance the construction of Lithuania’s LNG terminal.

The dispute between Achema and Amber Grid reached court in 2015. Kaunas District Court ruled that Achema had to pay the tax.

Gintaras Balčiūnas, deputy board chairman of Achema, has told DELFI that the company appealed the decision and expects a refund if the Court of Appeals rules in its favour.

“Our dispute is not over yet, but since one is legally obliged to pay one’s taxes, and we needed to close our books at the end of the year, we decided to pay the debt,” Balčiūnas said.
