“I’m not a supporter of absolute alcohol prohibition, but really I think that its availability needs to be reduced. In addition, the understanding of awareness that alcohol and driving are incompatible must be promoted. That is why this Zero Blood Alcohol Content bill has been created,” Skvernelis said.
Among the meeting participants were the president of the National Tobacco and Alcohol Control Coalition Aurelijus Veryga, the president of the Lithuanian Medical Students’ Association Rytis Kalinauskas, health promoter Juozas Dapšauskas, and actor Arūnas Sakalauskas.
Minister Skvernelis presented the 0 BAC bill at the meeting, and said that “we see the public and some politicians’ reactions, it shows that the project for 0 BAC may not receive approval. However, it does not mean that we have to give up. We still have to work and if necessary, to propose other options or instruments to restrict the alcohol consumption. I am talking not only about the drivers because statistics show that the vast majority of all crimes are committed under the effect of alcohol”.
The possibility of additional sanctions for drunk drivers were discussed at the meeting, including providing alternative options under which offenders would be forced to choose between imprisonment or participation in a treatment program.
