Speaking to journalists after the Social Democratic Party’s board meeting on Sunday evening, Andriukaitis said he should continue in the position for a week or two.
“I will remain in the position on a temporary basis until our committees and the presidium discuss candidates, then we will decide. As to the list of government members to be submitted to the president on Wednesday, I will be on it, and later there will be another candidate. I believe I will still work for a few days, a week or more, but definitely after Wednesday,” Andriukaitis told BNS.
His guess was that he would continue as Lithuania’s health minister until 20-23 July, as the European Parliament will elect the new European Commission (EC) president on 16 July and he starts discussions with leaders of member-states. According to Andriukaitis, the commissioner appointment procedure is now entirely different from what it used to be: it takes longer and will not end before October.
Andriukaitis said the Social Democrats had a few candidates to replace him at the Health Ministry but refused to specify any names.
