Belgian agencies to manually remove USSR from documents issued to Baltic citizens

In a letter to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, the Brussels administrative center has apologized for the inconveniences and has pledged to solve the problem without delay.

15min.lt news portal has said earlier this month that documents issued to Lithuanians in Belgium still specify the Soviet Union as their place of birth, although Belgium had pledged to indicate a city or location only instead of the Soviet Union as a country in documents issued to citizens of the Baltic states born before 1991.

Belgian authorities said that the exception of not specifying the Soviet Union was only made to the Baltic citizens, although their rules envisage that the National Register should indicate the name of the state as it was at the time of the person’s birth.
