Border controls introduced by some EU countries ‘unavoidable’, Grybauskaitė says

“For some countries it (introduction of border controls) is unavoidable, at least temporarily,” Grybauskaitė said in Malta to foreign media.

It is estimated that by the end of this year 200,000 migrants will have reached Sweden.

On Thursday, a EUR 1.8 billion trust fund for African countries will be set up in Valletta. The EU leaders and heads of African countries will discuss measures to fight illegal migration, cooperation in the EU border protection, and refugee readmission agreements. According to Lithuania’s Grybauskaitė, some African countries stress that they need the EU’s investments rather than its money.

“Markets of those countries must be capable of attracting (people – Elta) and offering young people opportunities to remain in their homelands,” the president said in Malta.

President Grybauskaitė is attending the EU-Africa Summit held in Malta within the context of previous EU decisions to bring the migration crisis under control. The summit aims to reach an agreement, together with African leaders, on joint measures to manage the flows of refugees to Europe.
