Brussels backs anti-propaganda initiative, Minister Linkevičius says

Attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Linkevičius expects the European External Action Service and the European Commission to propose the first elements of the plan in March.

“The initiative of our four countries on strategic communication received a very positive reaction. We can expect that in March, when the European Council conclusions will be drafted, the External Action Service and the European Commission will suggest more specific elements of the action plan,” Linkevičius told BNS by phone from Brussels.

“We are speaking not about some European propaganda but on ways to withstand that active propaganda coming from the Russian side and also create conditions for free alternative information channels,” the minister added.

Earlier this month, the foreign affairs ministers of Lithuania, the UK, Denmark and Estonia turned to EU institutions, warning them that “Russia is rapidly expanding its disinformation and propaganda campaign” aimed at getting “support for the Russian government’s political and military goals”.

Under the proposal, an online platform should be created to publish information on propaganda lies and manipulations, to support initiatives to create TV channels, online portals, radio stations and publications in the Russian language, promote the exchange of production within the EU and offer production to the Russian media.
