Butkevičius reappointed prime minister of Lithuania

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė had submitted Butkevičius’ nomination for prime minister after his government returned powers following Grybauskaitė’s inauguration for a second presidential term on 12 July.

Under the Law on the Government, after the Cabinet returns its powers, the president has 15 days to submit to the Seimas the candidature of the incumbent prime minister. When the Seimas approves the candidature, the president appoints the prime minister. If no more than half of ministers have changed in the incumbent government, the government receives new powers to continue implementing the Seimas previously-approved program. If the Seimas does not approve the prime minister, the government must resign.
