Coming months will be difficult for Lithuanian transport sector, PM says

“Many road carriers avoid going to Russia as it takes a long time to get there. We see certain problems and are working with other markets. I think the next 2-3 months will be rather difficult for this sector. This also concerns logistics and other companies,” said Butkevičius.

As reported, in late November Russia started subjecting Lithuanian carriers to particularly strict and time-consuming inspection procedures at its customs.

According to Rimantas Šimkus, a spokesman for Linava (Lithuanian National Road Carriers’ Association), most Lithuanian carriers are currently avoiding to travel to Russia. Meanwhile, at the Latvia-Russia border, lorries that have been stuck there since earlier are still lining up.

“There had been 150, but yesterday they counted 120 (lorries),” said the spokesman.

Šimkus says transport sector has been experiencing a decline for the last four years. He expects the new restrictions to be in force until the New Year.

“A shot has been fired to push Lithuanian road carriers from the market before the Christmas period, when the greatest cargo flows are available,” said the spokesman of Linava.
