Conflicting poll results on Lithuanians’ enthusiasm for euro

The Bank of Lithuania has released the results of a poll conducted by Berent Research Baltic showing that 53 percent of the Lithuanian population support euro adoption.

However, a poll carried out by Baltijos Tyrimai (Baltic Surveys) for the eurosceptic Europeans United for Democracy (EUD) group has found that 49 percent of Lithuanians disagree with the government’s decision to introduce the EU’s currency.

According to the survey conducted for the central bank, 53 percent of the population is in favour of the upcoming euro adoption, 39 percent are sceptical about the currency and the remaining 8 percent have no opinion.

Meanwhile the survey commissioned by the EUD found that 26 percent of Lithuanians approved of the government’s decision to adopt the euro and 49 percent disapproved of it. Twenty-two percent had no opinion and three percent did not answer.

Berent Research Baltic polled 1,002 persons on 3 through 26 November.

Baltijos Tyrimai interviewed 1,025 people on 14 through 24 November.
