Conservatives say won’t join Peasants, SocDems in coalition talks

“If the LPGU decides that they negotiate with the Social Democrats, we are definitely not going to any talks,” Gabrielius Landsbergis said in a video on Facebook.

In Landsbergis’ words, the Social Democrats’ decision to start coalition talks with the Peasants and Greens was not unexpected and did not come as a surprise.

“We are taking this very calmly. One could feel that both sides were inclined to agree urgently. Obviously, the provisions of the program are much less important for the Social Democrats. We can even think that it is the distribution of posts that is more important for them,” he told BNS.

Landsbergis said that the conservatives would remain open to proposals to negotiate with the LPGU if the latter failed to reach a deal with the Social Democrats.

The Peasants and Greens won 56 seats in the 141-member Seimas. The Homeland Union came in second with 31 and the Social Democratic Party, the largest party in the outgoing parliament, ended up third with 17 seats.
