Constitutional Court to open MP Bastys’ impeachment case

The impeachment commission said in its conclusion that Bastys breached his oath of office by concealing ties with former Russian KBG agent Piotr Voyeiko and “dishonestly provided conflicting testimony and explanations” to the State Security Department and the parliamentary National Security and Defense Committee about his knowledge of Voyeiko’s work for the KGB, helped organization of unannounced meetings of Russia’s Rosatom representatives with top officials of Lithuanian institutions.

Bastys is summoned to the hearing along with MPs Vytautas Bakas, the head of the National Security and Defense Committee, and Stasys Sedbaras, chairman of the impeachment commission, parliamentary Law Department Director Andrius Kabišaitis and other staff members of the parliament.

The impeachment proceedings against Bastys were initiated over his disclosed ties with Yevgeny Kostin, who is seen as a representative of Rosatom, Piotr Voyeiko, a former KGB agent, Ernest Matskevich, a journalist of the Russian state channel RTR, Saturnas Dubininkas, who is said to be a former Kaunas mafia leader, and Vadim Pakhomov, a businessman suspected of illegal activity.

Bastys has dismissed the accusations, saying the impeachment was a way of expelling from the political arena. The MP has repeatedly emphasized he had not breached his oath.
