Court rejects €19m overcharge claim from Vilniaus Energija on gas

Vilniaus Energija had brought a suit against Lietuvos Dujų Tiekimas, the state-owned gas supply company, but it was rejected by Vilnius District Court on January 21.

After Gazprom offered a 21% discount to Lithuania on gas it bought between 2013 and 2015, the government decided that industrial consumers would be paid back the overcharge, €81.4 million, in the form of discounts on gas they would consume in 2015-2016.

Vilniaus Energija then said it was disadvantaged by the scheme, because the company had invested in biofuel facilities and would therefore consume significantly less gas in 2015-2016. The company asked for the option to choose how to get back the overcharge.

Vilniaus Energija spokesman Nerijus Mikalajūnas told BNS that the company’s lawyers will look into the ruling and decide on whether to appeal it.
