Covid-19. February 10

In Spain, the total number of cases of coronavirus infection has already exceeded 3 million, the Ministry of Healthcare said on Tuesday.

Spain is one of the European countries hardest hit by the pandemic.

16,402 new infections were recorded in the country in the last 24 hours, making for a total of 3,005,487 cases. However, testing the antibodies in blood serum samples would show that the actual number is much higher.

The government decided on Wednesday to allow the opening of non-food stores, as well as hair and beauty salons with separate entrances, starting next week.

Shops, hairdressers and beauty parlours will have to provide a free space of 20 square meters per customer. If the area is smaller, only one client can be served at a time.

“Today, our task is to move away from a certain point and see how we succeed,” said Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

It will be possible to open those stores whose sales area does not exceed 300 square meters and which have “a direct entrance from the outside or a separate entrance used only by the customers of this store”.

With the government lifting some lockdown restrictions, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė asks citizens to refrain from unnecessary services, visits to trade venues and contacts.

“I have a request for people who plan to visit service providers or points of sale in the near future. I would very much like for you to assess the need to use certain services from next week or go sometime next week, as there are recommendations to avoid unnecessary contact, ”Ingrida Šimonytė said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“We still have over a dozen people dying every day, we have over a thousand people who are in hospitals, including over a hundred who are in intensive care units, so someone is not getting the healthcare they need. We still have to make additional efforts to improve the situation, reduce the number of cases and be able to return to normal life faster, stressed the Prime Minister.

Šimonytė emphasised that only by following the recommendations is the “a way to avoid a third lockdown that the government would absolutely like to avoid.”
