Dairy industry agreed not to reduce milk buying-in prices drastically

Industry representatives have assured Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius that claims about 30-40 percent reduction in milk buying-in prices are not true. According to Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitienė, some processors proposed to reduce the price by 35 percent, but changed their minds later on.

Processors provided proof that milk buying-in prices were not reduced retroactively. Purportedly, in some companies price was reduced by 7 percent only after 16 August, and later it was proposed to be further reduced by 12 percent.

According to the prime minister and the agriculture minister, another meeting to discuss the prices will be held before 1 September.

“If prices decrease in Europe, and their reduction is predicted, then they will drop in Lithuania, too. We have to meet before September and discuss on what price should be retained in September,” said Baltraitienė.
