“I personally think this is necessary but we can discus when and how and ways of preparing the society. There will be a discussion in preparation of the government’s program,” Karoblis told journalists after meeting with President Dalia Grybauskaitė on Friday.
Lithuania reintroduced a partial conscription scheme last year, recruiting about 3,000 young people annually. Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said earlier this month, before his appointment to the post, that the county could transfer to general conscription in the long run.
Experts say that preparations would take a few years after a political decision has been reached. Lithuania’s Armed Forces currently does not have sufficient accommodation facilities for thousands of conscripts, also lacking money for accoutrements and instructors for training them. Many specialists have named 2020 as a realistic date.
