Denying visa-free travel to Georgians and Ukrainians would be unfair, Linkevičius says

“We promised visa-free travel to Eastern Partnership countries, provided they met all the conditions we set. We know that it took both countries much effort and hard work to do everything we asked for. There are now voices that want to set new conditions, but what we are trying to say is that it wouldn’t be correct either politically or, to be frank, legally,” Butkevičius told BNS from Luxembourg where he met EU foreign ministers to discuss Eastern Partnership on Monday.

Linkevičius hopes that citizens of Georgia and Ukraine can expect visa-free travel to the European Union this summer.

During the meeting, the Lithuanian minister noted that the EU had still to finish ratifying association and free trade agreements with Moldova and Georgia.

Linkevičius also discussed the so-called Savchenko List, Lithuania’s recently introduced blacklist of individuals linked to the conviction of the Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko in Russia, and urged other countries to follow suit with similar sanctions.
