The severance packages to MPs whose mandates will expire are defined in the Seimas statute, the rule-book of parliamentary procedures.
MPs are entitled to severance pay that equals their average monthly wages times the number of years of their uninterrupted term in parliament. The pay cannot be lower than two or higher than six average monthly salaries. Currently, an MP’s average salary is €2,531 before taxes. However, they receive more, as they are also paid a bonus for years of public service.
In the 2008 elections, 67 of Lithuania’s 141 parliamentarians were not re-elected, while the number in 2012 was 63. They received €587,000 in severance pay eight years ago and €840,000 four years ago.
