Eight refugees from Eritrea relocated to Lithuania

“Eight citizens of Eritrea were relocated to Lithuania from Italy on March 9,” reads the press release.

This is the first time Lithuania has received refugees from Eritrea. The country mainly hosts migrants from Syria and Iraq, which have been locked in conflicts over the past few years.

The first Eritrean nationals recently arrived in Latvia, as well.

The United Nations (UN) says that the Eritrean government has been engaged in crimes against humanity for more than 25 years, while Eritrean officials, especially in security services, are responsible for human slavery, disappearances, torture, rape, murders and other crimes.

Currently, Lithuania has received 262 persons from Italy, Greece and Turkey under the EU program. The country has committed itself to hosting 1,105 refugees.
