ELECTIONS. Gentvilas sees no reason to form negotiation bloc with Conservatives

Liberal Movement frontrunner Eugenijus Gentvilas sees no reason to form a negotiation bloc with the Conservatives. He believes that while the parties agree on a number of points, there are also a number of differences, thus according to Gentvilas there is no need to form a bloc in negotiating with the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union who won the election.

“No, we wouldn’t consider it (regarding the negotiation bloc – BNS). We were a separate opposition in this term as well, not participating as a common front. Why should we do it now? That said we would come to terms with the Conservatives on a number of value positions far easier, in this regard we will inevitably be held as a bloc by many. But I have told both Gabrielius Landsbergis and Andrius Kubilius that we are not planning to form any formalised bloc,” E. Gentvilas told BNS on Sunday night.

He explained that the Liberals and Conservatives opinions often part, however when necessary they will be able to support one another. Regarding the potential for such a bloc to ease the negotiations with the Peasant-Greens, he stated that “there is no need to bicker,” having not made a negotiating bloc.

“We will support state matters and there is no need to bicker on the things we disagree on,” explained Gentvilas.

The party frontrunner stated that he sees opportunity in working in the opposition and will not seek coalition membership at any price.
