Viktor Uspaskikh DELFI (R. Achmedov)
The issue will now be discussed at the EP plenary in Brussels on Wednesday evening, spokesman for the EP Information Bureau in Lithuania, Robertas Pogorelis, told BNS.
“The EP Committee on Legal Affairs recommended today to revoke Uspaskich’s immunity in the case of financial accounting, the EP will vote on it in plenary tomorrow (…) in Brussels,” Pogorelis said on Tuesday.
If the immunity is lifted, the Lithuanian Court of Appeals would be able to hear a case where a court of lower instance sentenced Uspaskich to four years in prison for fraud and bookkeeping fraud.
Uspaskich, 55, pleads not guilty and says the process was politicized. The verdict will take effect after a ruling of the Lithuanian Court of Appeal.
