EP decision on Moldova is clear signal to Russia, Lithuanian MEP says

According to the MEP, who is a rapporteur on the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU, the pace and quality of reforms in Moldova provide a reason to rejoice – it is an undoubted leader among the EU Eastern Partnership countries.

Auštrevičius welcomed the EP’s timely decision, as on 30 November Moldova will hold parliamentary elections. The liberal MEP has also emphasised that the decision sends a signal to Russia.

“Russia is unable to stop democratic reforms in Moldova and hinder its successful co-operation with the EU, which we are awaiting as the Association Agreement is implemented. Russia also has no right to question Moldova’s territorial integrity over the separatist Transnistria region that the international community finds an integral part of Moldova. We urge Russia to stop violating its own commitments to the World Trade Organisation and lift the embargo on Moldovan food products,” said Auštrevičius.

The EP resolution on EU-Moldova Association Agreement passed by 529 votes to 96, with 46 abstentions.
