Vilnius City Municipality issued a permit for an event on Friday outside the Government building in Kudirka Square. The protest action organizers say it will include representatives of various trade unions, education workers, ethnic minority and Lithuanian school communities, about 2,000 people in all.
According to organizers, the rally will protest closing down of schools, the “catastrophic” situation of people working in kindergartens as well as the planned Labour Code changes that they say will undermine employees’ rights.
The permit for the rally was issued to Danuta Narbut who represents the Parents Forum of Polish Schools in Lithuania. Backed by the LLRA, she has organized several protest actions involving Polish-language schools.
The Confederation of Lithuanian Trade Unions and the main union of education workers have said they will not be joining the action.
