“The instruments countries have taken together with international organizations to control the spread of the new epidemic have yielded what we can call an efficient result: at least the emergence of new cases has been stopped or they are not rising faster than forecast before. This shows that the instruments are efficient, and it is an optimistic sign,” the EC member told BNS in a telephone interview from Brussels on Monday after returning from his first visit to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea over the weekend.
Andriukaitis went to the region last week together with EC member for Humanitarian Aid Christos Stylianides of Cyprus to observe the efforts to combat the Ebola spread and the treatment of infected individuals.
In Andriukaitis’ words, the “geographic situation” of the epidemic is currently changing – the spread of the virus has moved from large cities to more remote regions that lack the necessary infrastructure for doctors to arrive, there are no roads, therefore, it is crucial to “change the tactic” and take additional urgent steps.
“We now need additional mobile teams that could travel deeper into the country,” said the commissioner for Lithuania.
He added that the situation is most complex in Guinea, with the most efficient efforts reported in Liberia.
