EU Council to finalize refugee quota for Lithuania next week, interior minister says

“There are only discussions now, the final numbers will be available after the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council. We’re talking about 3-40 people but it will depend on the overall situation,” the minister told journalists at the government on Monday.

He emphasized that the Lithuanian position remains unchanged – hosting refugees should be voluntary.

“We are in support of solidarity on a voluntary basis. Every member-state should decide for itself on the number of legal immigrants it can accept,” said Skvernelis.

In the effort to solve the migration crisis in the Mediterranean Sea, the European Commission has suggested resettling up to 710 refugees to Lithuania.

If the Baltic state agrees, it should receive 207 refugees from third countries, in addition to 503 refugee applications the country would have to process within two years – the applications would come from Greece and Italy that receive the highest numbers of refugees.

Lithuanian leaders maintain the country is not yet ready to accept a high number of refugees.
