“As to the next financial framework, we see what challenges await us. First of all, this is due to the consequences of Brexit. Nevertheless, certain decisions were made and included in the Lithuania-EU accession agreement. This is primarily about the Ignalina nuclear power plant closure. (There is) a very clear commitment to fund this finance-intensive project,” Skvernelis told the Žinių Radijas radio station.
“The European Court of Auditors has suggested that that perhaps this (decommissioning) should be funded by Lithuania’s budgetary resources. This is unacceptable and unbearable for us. Therefore, it will be one of the key issues,” he said.
Oettinger, the EU commissioner in charge of budget and human resources, is coming to Vilnius on Thursday to discuss the EU’s next multiannual financial framework with Lithuania’s leaders.
In the new EU budget beyond 2020, Lithuania will seek greater support for agriculture and regional development and will also try to secure funding for synchronizing its power grid with the Western European system and for the Ignalina plant decommissioning projects.
