“If we want citizens to stay healthy for a longer time, we have to invest the money allocated for healthcare in a proper way and pay special attention to health improvement. This is particularly important for Lithuania, which is one of the fastest ageing countries in the European Union,” the Commission’s representation in Lithuania quoted the country’s EU commissioner, Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, as saying in a press release.
The EU’s executive body recommends, among other things, that to ensure economic growth, the country should deal with the problem of skilled labour, improve the performance of its healthcare system and reduce the tax burden for low income earners.
“Lithuania is facing a substantial fall in the working-age population, driven by demographics, migration and poor performance of the healthcare system,” the Commission said its recommendations to the country presented on Wednesday.
In its latest forecasts released in early May, the Commission projects that Lithuania’s GDP growth will reach 2.8 percent this year and will accelerate to 3.3 percent next year.
