“I regret to say that Europe needs her more as the chancellor of Germany, not the UN leader, her current role is now far more important for Europe,” Grybauskaitė said commenting on talks that Merkel’s appointment as the next UN secretary general.
Grybauskaitė added that every international organization, including the UN, were only as strong as its member-states.
“Therefore, Angela Merkel is needed in Europe and it will be better if she stays in Europe,” she added.
The discussions about Merkel running for UN secretary general first appeared in the German media last year. They were rekindled by a recent interview of incumbent UN leader, Ban Ki-moon, to the German publication Bild where he applauded Merkel’s open-door policy.
