External border controls tightened, including for EU citizens

“There will not be any big changes, because we are ready for this. A biometric check system was put in place at all points several years ago and, therefore, we did not need any new technical equipment,” it quoted Sigitas Ratkevičius of the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service as saying.

If more thorough controls slow down border traffic flows too much, the EU’s member states are permitted to carry out only targeted checks at land and sea border checkpoints, but only after performing a risk-based assessment to ensure that such a relaxation of the rules does not affect security.
