Farmers will support govt-proposed forestry restructuring – Seimas speaker

“I can already say today that the Farmers and Green Union group will have a unanimous opinion and I believe there will be no major problems to support the government decision on forest reform,” Pranckietis told Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday morning.

In his words, establishment of a single company “would ease great tensions and interpretations about lack of transparency in the processes in the forestry system.”

Currently, all state-owned forests are governed by the Directorate General of State Forests and 42 for-profit forestry companies. Delegated by LFGU, Environment Minister Kęstutis Navickas in January announced plans of founding a single state-run company for forests. Under the bill, the company would have 25 territorial units.

The ministry says that the merger of forestry companies would allow optimization of the property of state forests, while critics dismiss the proposed reform as hasty and a potential driver of privatization of state forests.
