FEZ planned near Lithuanian capital – mayor

FEZ would be established in Pagiriai, in central part of the city that currently accommodates the Vilnius Logistics Park and an intermodal terminal.

The idea was discussed by the mayor and Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis on Wednesday.

“We discussed the possibility of building factories around Vilnius – an industrial park or a free economic zone project. We agreed to have a meeting with the Vilnius district municipality and the government. We decided that the best location would be in Pagiriai where a logistics park is planned, we are searching for ways to make it suitable for production,” Šimašius told BNS after the meeting.

In the prime minister’s opinion, it is important to assess the benefits of an industrial zone in the city or the district for boosting the country’s competition, adviser Tomas Beržinskas said.

Šimašius assured that efforts had been made for years to “drive investments out of Vilnius” to other municipalities, which kept investors from coming to Lithuania.

Together with the state-run railway company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), the Vilnius municipality runs a 31-million-euro 460-hectare logistics park being developed around a 36.7-million-euro Vilnius intermodal terminal opened in 2015.
