Founder and former leader of Socialist People’s Front in Lithuania leaves party

The controversial politician once stood trial for publicly proclaiming that the people killed during the events of 13 January 1991 had been killed by other Lithuanians. His grandfather, Justas Paleckis, was the acting president of Lithuania during the Soviet Union’s invasion and oversaw Lithuania’s transition to the Soviet Union.

Paleckis presented his reasons for leaving in a press conference on Thursday. He says that he is not going to join any other political force and will be running for the upcoming Seimas elections in a single-member constituency in Vilnius.

The Socialist People’s Front was established in 2008. Paleckis led the party until November 2014.
