After the deadly attack on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, the leader of the Dutch Party of Freedom has proposed to ban immigration from Muslim countries, while Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French right-wing party Front National, has demanded to call a referendum on bringing back death penalty.
“There were talks on banning or restricting migration or employment opportunities, but we said “no, free movement of people is a fundamental principle” and we support this, and this has to be implemented. There must not exist abuse or discrimination in this regard. It is a matter for discussion. This is our position,” Linkevičius said in an interview to the radio Žinių Radijas on Wednesday.
When asked what the options are, Linkevičius proposed not only to enter discussions, but also make decisions. According to the foreign minister, the issue has become even more relevant considering the recent terrorist attack in France.
“We should not act so oddly and start caring about complex issues when a tragedy or disaster occurs. But now the matters of terrorism have made it to the top of global agenda,” noted Linkevičius.
