G. Landsbergis urges Steponavičius to resign as MP

“Steponavicius must immediately leave the Seimas so as not discredit the name of a member of the Seimas,” Gabrielius Landsbergis told BNS on Thursday.

“I think he has to step down and give up his mandate without waiting for debates and for commissions to be set up,” he said.

Prosecutor General Evaldas Pašilis earlier in the day formally asked the parliament to strip MP Gintaras Steponavičius of his immunity from criminal prosecution on suspicions that he has helped push through legislation benefiting the interests of MG Baltic, one of the country’s biggest business groups.

Prosecutors say that they have sufficient grounds to believe that Steponavičius maintained personal contacts with “the head of a business concern” and discussed with that person money transfers that were later used to illegally finance his political party and Gintaras Steponavičius’ Support Foundation, as well as his parliamentary election campaign.

Landsbergis thinks that Steponavičius’ “involvement in all that corruption scheme shows that this is a matter for the party leadership”.
