Health Ministry disapproves of abortion ban

Deputy Health Minister Ausra Bilotienė Motiejūnienė on Wednesday presented the ministry’s position on the proposed bill to the parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs.

“We won’t avoid illegal abortions, deaths and other consequences. This can also be considered as discrimination against women and restriction of their rights,” she said.

The Law on the Protection of Life in the Prenatal Phase, which would ban all abortions except for rare cases, is back on the parliament’s agenda after a break of several years. The Committee on Legal Affairs began discussing the bill on Wednesday.

This is not the first time that the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (EAPL) has tried to push through an abortion ban, but all previous attempts have failed. The current bill started its way through the parliament back in 2013.

Currently, a pregnancy of up to 12 weeks can be legally terminated in Lithuania without any additional conditions.

Abortions are banned in Malta, Ireland and Poland. The other EU member states have abortion time limits ranging from 10 to 18 weeks.
