“Mental health and hormone replacement therapy-related health care services should be provided to transgender individuals who wish to receive these services,” the ministry said in a press release on Thursday.
The press release was issued after Health Minister Aurelijus Veryga met with representatives of the Lithuanian Gay League and the Human Rights Monitoring Institute.
Tomas Vytautas Raškevičius of the Lithuanian Gay League told BNS that the LGBT community agrees that the transitional period should focus on ensuring psychiatric counseling and hormone replacement therapy, with the issue of surgical sex change operations to be addressed at a later stage when the necessary laws are adopted.
In his words, doctors now often refuse to prescribe hormones and, therefore, the Health Ministry is expected to take decisions that will provide legal clarity.
