According to the ministry, which carried out the probe after receiving an anonymous complaint, firefighters changed the tires of cars owned by the department’s heads and administration officials and did minor repair works for them. The department’s premises were used as personal garages for storing tires.
“Strict subordination is what makes statutory services different (form other services). This means that all orders of superiors must be followed without asking too many questions. This made it possible to exploit employees for a long period of time,” Interior Minister Eimutis Misiūnas said in a press release.
The minister plans to turn to law-enforcement bodies on suspicions of abuse of office by Vygandas Kurkulis, a former deputy head of the Fire and Rescue Department, and Aloyzas Baradinskas, head of the Specialized Fire and Rescue Board.
