Hundreds honour Mariupol attack victims in Vilnius

Participants used candles to form the name of Mariupol, sang Ukraine‘s national anthem and later brought part of the candle to the Ukrainian Embassy in Vilnius.

“When such tragedies are taking place, we must show our solidarity with Ukraine,” Lithuanian MP Mantas Adomėnas, one of the organizers, told BNS.

Attending the event, Ukrainian Ambassador to Lithuania Valeriy Zhovtenko said that Lithuanians “once again demonstrated that they are real Europeans.”

“I am only a participant at this event. In my opinion, Lithuanians once again demonstrated that they are real Europeans. This event proves that they not only express condolences to Ukraine but it also demonstrates that they understand that what is going on in eastern Ukraine is not only a threat to Ukraine but it’s a threat to Europe as well,” the ambassador told BNS.

Thirty civilians were killed and over 90 were injured on Saturday when the Ukrainian city of Mariupol came under a rocket attack. The Ukrainian government and international monitors say rockets were launched from the territory controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
