Hundreds of dairy farmers protest in Vilnius over milk crisis

The organisers of the protest had planned to bring cows into the centre of Vilnius as part of the demonstration, but they were not permitted by the authorities to do so.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture promised to compensate dairy farmers for their losses due to falling milk prices. It was decided to support dairy farmers with a one-time subsidy by paying them €66 per cow, with slightly higher payouts for farmers that were members of cooperatives.

However, the dairy farmers are demanding a higher level compensation and higher milk purchase prices. They have said that the subsidies being offered fail to solve the fundamental problems in the dairy market.

Last week, in response to dairy farmers’ complaints, the Seimas set minimum prices for milk purchases.

These prices have not yet come into effect because the amendment has yet to be ratified by the president.

The Competition Council said the decision to set minimum prices may be unconstitutional.
